Derrière la maison il y avait un arbre.
    Behind the house there was a tree.

  derrière vs. arrière
  sometimes derrière and arrière are interchangeable:
À l' arrière de la maison il y avait un arbre.
  Derrière la maison il y avait un arbre.
    Behind the house there was a tree.
  Vue de derrière, c' était une très belle femme.
    Behind the house there was a tree.
  sometimes derrière and arrière not interchangeable, this especially when the meaning is back, backwards (= arrière)
Il a jeté la tête en arrière.
    He has thrown the head backwards.
  Il a fait un pas en arrière et est tombé dans l' abîme.
    He made a step backwards and fell down the deep.
Un pas en avant, un pas en arrière.
    One step foreward and one backwards.

In compound words only arrière is used:

  Examples
arrière-pensées = ulterior motive
  arrière-goût = after-taste
