A similar example is 'bad':
mauvais, mauvaise
= bad is almost always an adjective and
mal
(= badly) is mostly an adverb.
Examples: mauvais = bad

This is a bad idea.
in very few cases
mauvais
is used as adverbs

This tastes/smells bad.
