As a general rule can be seen: Is there reference to perception or senses, it is usually c' est bon.

Examples bon / bien = good
  Tu aimes ce fromage? Oui, il est bon!
    Do you like this cheese? Yes, it is good!
  Est-ce que tu es d' accord? Oui, c' est bien!
    Do you agree? Yes, it is fine.

A similar example is 'bad': mauvais, mauvaise = bad is almost always an adjective and mal (= badly) is mostly an adverb.

Examples: mauvais = bad
  C' est une mauvaise excuse.
    This is a bad excuse.
  C' est une mauvaise idée.
    This is a bad idea.
  in very few cases mauvais is used as adverbs
  Cela sent mauvais.
    This tastes/smells bad.
Examples: mal = badly, poorly
  Il m' a mal informé.
    He has informed me badly.
  Il a mal parlé de moi.
    He has talked badly about me.
  in connection with the verb être it can be used as an adjective
  C' est mal dit.
    It is wrong to say that.
  There are some often used phrases with mal to remember
  J' ai du mal à y croire.
    It is hard for me to believe.
  J' ai du mal à le faire.
    It is hard for me to do it.
  J' ai du mal à m' y faire.
    It is hard for me to get used to it.

Examples meilleur = better
  Les meilleurs amis sont ceux qui sont là quand on en a besoin.
    The best friends are those, who are there for you, when you need them.
  Il vaut mieux ne pas y réfléchir.
    It is best not to think about it.
