When it's not clear whether we are talking about the first or the second half of the day, the adverbial phrase (morning, afternoon, evening) can be used to specify.

  Times of the day
La matinée = morning
Tôt le matin (l’aube) = early morning
L’après midi = afternoon
Le soir = evening
