11.7 Substituting dont , où, dans lequel / laquelle / lesquels / lesquelles, que

e + où = d' où can be substituted by dont or duquel / de laquelle / desquels / desquelles or que. Usually dont is preferred.

Examples
Le pays d' où il vient.
Le pays dont il vient.
Le pays duquel il vient.
  The town from where he comes.
La maison d' où il est sorti.
La maison dont il est sorti.
La maison de laquelle il est sorti.
  The house out of which he has come.

With sayings, proverbs and fixed expressions often is already determined which relative pronoun to use. Some expressions of time rather use que than .

L' été nous étions heureux. Maintenant que tu le dis, je le vois aussi.
  The summer that we were happy.   Now that you say it, I see it too.
Au moment elle me l' a dit j' ai été choqué. La première fois que je l' ai vu, il me semblait arrogant.
  In the moment that he told me, I was shocked.   The first time that I have seen him, he seemed arrogant to me.
A l' époque tout ça s' était passé, j' étais malade.    
  In the time when all this happened I was sick.    
A l' heure l' accident s' est produit, je travaillais.    
  At the time when the accident happened I was working.
