12.10 Conjunctions of contradiction and doubt


12.10.10 ou ... ou = either ... or
Ou il vient trop tard, ou il ne vient pas du tout, de toute façon ce n' est pas quelqu' un de très fiable.
  Either he comes too late or he does not come at all, in any case he is not reliable.

12.10.11 l' un ... l' autre = the one ... the other
L' un m' a dit qu' il faut se méfier de ces gens, l' autre m' a dit que ce sont des gens sérieux.
  The one told me that one needs to mistrust these people, the other said that they are serious.

12.10.12 d' autre part = on the other hand
D' une part il faut faire attention, mais d' autre part il ne faut pas se laisser décourager.
  On the on handsaide one has to be careful, on the other hand one must not get disencouraged.

12.10.13 voire, même = even
Le transport ferroviaire revient cher voire très cher.
Le transport ferroviaire revient cher même très cher.
  The transport with the railway is expensive, even very expensive.

12.10.14 non seulement... mais encore ... = not only ... but additionally
Non seulement il n'avait pas suivi mes conseils, mais encore il a fait tout le contraire.
  Not only that he did not follow our advice, but also he did the opposite.

12.10.15 mais en réalité = but in reality
Tout le monde croit qu' il est grossier, mais en réalité c' est quelq' un de très sensible.
  Everyone believes that he is gross, but in reality he is someone very sensitive.

12.10.16 plutôt que = instead of
On parle d' eux plutôt que de parler avec eux.
  One talks about them, instead of with them.

12.10.17 d'un côté... de l'autre = on the one side ... on the other
D' un côté ils veulent gagner beaucoup d' argent, de l' autre côté ils n' ont pas envie de travailler.
  On the one side they waht to gain much money, on the other side they do not want to work.

12.10.18 mais = but
Il voulait venir lundi, mais il ne m' a pas dit à quelle heure.
  He wanted to come on Monday, but he did not tell me, at what time.

12.10.19 cependant = meanwhile
Il gaspille toujours son argent pour des bêtises, cependant il me raconte qu' il n' a jamais d' argent.  
  He always spends his money for nonsense, meanwhile he tells me that he has never money.
